Top 11 Signs in Britain

Below are my top 11 street signs in Britain - 10 of them have pictures, and one doesn't. Explanation follows in each caption.

The Working-Men's Conservative Club of Caernarfon, Wales. In the US, "working men" and "conservative" have come to often be on opposite sides of the political spectrum. Cary thought his dad would get a kick out of this.
The Welsh are so modest. This isn't absolutely the best gift shop in Wales - just probably the best gift shop in Wales. And this wasn't the only sign like this that we saw. I was also tickled by the Wonderllandudno part - obviously this was taken in Llandudno (where Alice in Wonderland was rumored to be partially created).

The British version of Dollar Tree - Poundland!

St. Sampson's Centre for the Over 60s, York.

All Saints Pavement, York. I think the name had something to do with what was once the only pavement in town or something like that.

Bile Beans - mmmMMM! We googled these and Wikipedia told us they were a laxative.

Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate, the shortest street with the longest name in York.

This house in Conwy, Wales, was advertised as having "deceptively spacious 4 bedrooms." You can see better if you click to enlarge the picture.

Ancient monuments attack!

I thought this street was so named because it was so small - until Cary pointed out the giant hole in the city wall right next to it.
The last sign I loved but didn't get a picture of was in several restaurant bathrooms. Where in the US we have signs that remind us, "Employees must wash hands before returning to work," British bathrooms sternly say, "Now wash your hands!"

The British have such a knack for naming things - reading signs and town names was one of my absolute favorite parts of the trip. The names of towns get better the smaller the towns are. In Wales they get longer and less pronounceable. I will be posting my list of town names tomorrow or Monday, although it will be harder work than I anticipated because we left the road atlas in Melbourne to be returned to Gill and Roy Streatfield. But if it's anything like I hope it will be, it will knock your socks off, so stay tuned!
